A tour around
North-east Sardinia, just off the Costa Smeralda. The archipelago is made up of over 60 islands of varying sizes. It extends for 5134 hectares on land and 15046 metres at sea. The largest island is La Maddalena; Caprera, Santo Stefano, Spargi, Budelli, Santa Maria and Razzoli are the other most important islands.
Between the inlets of Bonifacio and the Costa Smeralda, the La Maddalena archipelago is an area of rare natural beauty and particular historical and cultural value. The park was established in 1994, and safeguards around 180 kilometres of coastline, as well as treasures of fauna and flora of primary importance.
Thanks to the mild winter climate and warm summers, the Mediterranean scrub is symbolic of the archipelago, which is always luxuriant and criss-crossed by beautiful pathways.
The park is a point of reference for the fauna, particularly nesting sea birds. It is an obligatory stopping point for migratory birds, which include the Corsican seagull, a unique species of seagull that is endemic in the Mediterranean
The archipelago’s biggest strength is the clear, transparent sea. It has fabulous beaches, natural coves and various little islands, and it is a favourite destination with lovers of sub-aqua diving and underwater fishing.
La Maddalena, a town of 12 thousand inhabitants, has been a crossroads for the military and political events of the last few centuries. There are plenty of defensive structures, which testify to the archipelago’s defensive position in the Mediterranean.
Most of the archipelago is uninhabited, but it becomes busy in the summer and is a favourite destination with tourists from all over the world. La Maddalena can be reached from Palau, by passenger and car ferries. A large number of excursions are also run on characteristic boats which leave from here for the various smaller islands, exploring the sea coves and offering visitors the chance to try delicious fish dishes.
